We are always suckers for ghost towns. We visited St. Elmo in the Sawatch Mountains at an elevation of just under 10,000 feet. It's a town that looks like something out of a western movie and is pretty well preserved. St. Elmo was settled in 1880 when gold and silver mining started. The most successful mine in the area recovered $60,000,000 worth of gold while it was in operation. The mining industry declined in the early 1920s and the population declined until it became the ghost town it is today.
