We spent two weeks in central Iowa on a beautiful piece of land that's been in my family since the 60s. There's a lot of history on this land. My grandparents lived here for over twenty years and raised five kids, including my mom. They left in the early 80s when the house was lost to a tragic fire on Christmas Eve. My folks and I also happened to be staying there at the time — they lost everything, including their wedding rings. Since it was Christmastime, a firefighter reached through one of the windows before the house was fully engulfed to salvage a partially singed teddy bear under the tree. It was one of the only things that was saved from the house. Years later my uncle bought the land from my grandparents and has lived here ever since. Where the old house once stood is now a beautiful, giant garden.
